HMI stands for “human-machine interface” and includes a Smart HMI display and usually also a intelligent touch panel. The Smart display of an HMI visualizes process parameters or status modules of equipment for the user or the service technician. With the touch panel, entries can also be made directly on the Smart HMI modules.

Even the module of an MP-3 player, together with individual buttons, could already be used as an operating unit or HMI.
