TFT comes from the English word "Thin-Film-Transistor": each sub-pixel (red, green and blue) is controlled directly via several transistors so that it can light up statically, i.e. permanently. This results in a very wide viewing angle compared to conventional LCDs which are controlled multiplexed. TFT displays are color displays. IPS displays offer particularly high color fidelity, even over a wide viewing angle.
TFT displays are available with and without intelligence. Also for installation. TFTs with intelligence are easy to use: this starts with the SPI, I²C or RS-232 serial interface commonly used with microcontrollers.
